Shura graduated from San Francisco State University majoring in World Music studies and Flagship Chinese. Her main emphasis in music is the guzheng, a 21 to 26 Chinese traditional plucked string instrument. She started playing the guzheng while living in Macau, after moving to the Bay area, she continued her guzheng studies with Bay Area guzheng master Weishan Liu and joined the San Francisco Guzheng Music Society, doing regular community performances with the group.
In 2013, Shura participated in a study abroad program to China to study Mandarin Chinese and Chinese music. While in Nanjing, she interned with the Jiangsu Provincial Arts Group and participated in a performance with the Jiangsu Chinese Orchestra in June 2014.
In 2015, Shura formed a world music band with 3 other musicians of San Francisco State University music department, called The Creative World Music Ensemble, and later changed it to Sawharo. Sawharo has been performing throughout the Bay Area, and was commissioned by San Mateo Libraries for 9 performances in 2017.
